Storyboard animatic

Feedback on animatic
One issue with my storyboard is the length of the shots when in reality to match the beat and pace of the song I will need to film each individual process from several different angles and distances. In order to keep the beat of the song with the video editing, a key element of trance music videos as exemplified by Goodwins theory's Similarly the majority of shots in the animatic are shown as being from the same distance when in practice I will be using a much wider range of shot distances, heights and angles.

Poll Analysis

In my research poll posted on polljunkie.com, I was fortunate enough to receive 6 replies. Which has helped me to gain a more consistent level of understanding of the audience for Trance music.

One preference for trance music is that the majority of scenes should take place in both indoor settings such as a club as well as outdoor settings such as an urban car park.

Another feature would be not to devote too much attention to the artist whilst maintaining that more time is given to the narrative of the video rather than the performance element.

The results of the poll also suggest the average age range of the people who listen to trance music generally being between the ages of 15-25 although possibly going up to 30, with this in mind I have decided this will be the clear age range of the actors in my video to help relate further to the audience.

With regard to intertextual references there was no option with an outright majority each choice having recieved 33% of the vote, however I have decided that despite this I should include some intertextual referances although I feel I should try to make any referances more subtle and less obvious in order to try and please my audience.

The general opinion from my poll is that the most common place to find a trance music video would be on the internet via sites such as Youtube. As a result of this I now know that my music video must be available on a video sharing website or blog such as youtube.

The Brief

The song that I will be producing a trance music video, the track I have chosen has been posted online on a youtube channel called "Cancali Music" The artist of the song goes by the production name of "Tjipz". However due to the artists terms of use for her music which is copyright free I can do whatever I like with it and will most likely reinvent the artist with a new name and persona to match more of the specified criteria in my poll results such as the target audience of 15-24 year olds. The title of the song is "It's time 4 dance"
The lyrics of the song are basicly very short and are repeated several times as follows:

I feel the rave more and more, I'd like to jump right on the floor,
I feel the bass drum more and more. Its time for dance.
I feel the rave more and more, I'd like to jump right on the floor,
I feel the bass drum more and more, Its time for dance.

Finding The Track

The song that I have chosen to produce an accompanying music video for. I obtained from a page which offers a range of non copyrighted and file share friendly music, which the publisher states clearly in their terms of use. The song itself has not been given a name by the creator/publisher. Which means that I will have to create a name for the song. The song has been published by "Cancali" - a Youtube account which I will be using as the name of the artist as nothing more specific is given in the information available. Furthermore the song itself has no lyrics and fits in to the trance style music genre.

Music Video deconstruction

The music video I have chosen to analyse is Amy Winehouse - Back to black, as I feel it covers most of Andrew Goodwins theory's on music videos.

The music video begins with a medium monochrome shot of a dimly lit room, to the left of the shot we can see a wooden table and single chair at which one man wearing a suits sat facing to the left. To the mans right in the centre of the frame we have another man who is sat alone on a sofa facing towards the camera, like the first man he too is wearing a suit while he also wears a hat. Finally to the right of the frame sits Amy Winehouse in an armchair facing left as well, she appears to be wearing a black formal dress and smart shoes. The three of them appear to be waiting for something due to their formal attire and lack of movement they are each facing different directions and there are no apparent interactions between them, as well as each being sat on a different type of chair; dining chair, sofa and armchair and as such positioned at different heights. The shot appears to have been composed as a homage to the film noir genre due to it being shot in atmospheric black and white, with 1950s furnishings, whilst the people present are also wearing clothes evocative of the period and appear gathered in a sombre mood.
which could be considered to fit with the idea that this is both a power ballad and an R&B video.

Also as a possible illustrative relationship between music and visuals we can see quite early on in the video several people holding instruments such as a saxophone, bass and in the case of this picture a trumpet. Also throughout the song as part of the beat we can hear a bell toll which helps to illustrate the idea of a funeral procession.

Similarly the relationship between the visuals and the lyrics is also exemplified strenuously throughout the video through the use of the line "We only said good-bye with words, I died a hundred times" especially when coupled with the montage of the funeral procession. and the other heavy signifiers surrounding death.
Another of Goodwin's criteria which is met is "the demands of the record label" and their need to include frequent close ups of the artist. As well as show any persistent visual styles or motifs which appear throughout the work of the artist. Such as in this instance being Amy Winehouse's tattoo's which have become one of her visual trademarks.
